When to start making and listing seasonal digital products

Buyers start searching weeks before an occasion. Being ready before they do is half the battle.

Seasonal products can be some of the best sellers in a digital shop: Christmas gift tags, Valentine's cards, Mother's Day printables, back to school planners. They can also be some of the most frustrating, because a product listed a week before the occasion usually misses most of the buyers.

The trick is to work backwards from three dates.

Three dates for every season

  1. Buyers start searching. Interest builds well before the day. For Christmas, searches start growing from mid-October. For smaller occasions it is often three or four weeks before.
  2. List by. New listings often take a few weeks to start appearing well in search, so a product should be live a few weeks before searches start to build.
  3. Start making by. Work back from the list-by date by however long you need to design, check and photograph a product. For many sellers that is around four weeks.

These are rules of thumb drawn from common seller guidance rather than exact science, and they vary by product and platform. Your own sales history is the best guide.

Example dates for 2027

Using common lead times and four weeks to make each product:

Start making, list by and searches begin
Valentine's Day (14 February): make from 29 November, list by 27 DecemberSearches: 17 January
Mother's Day, UK (7 March): make from 20 December, list by 17 JanuarySearches: 7 February
Back to school, UK (early September): make from 9 June, list by 7 JulySearches: 28 July
Halloween (31 October): make from 11 July, list by 8 AugustSearches: 22 August
Christmas (25 December): make from 28 August, list by 25 SeptemberSearches: 16 October

Notice how early the work starts. Christmas products are being made at the end of summer, and Valentine's products before Christmas. It is easy to miss a season simply because it does not feel close yet.

Seasons that are easy to forget

Make seasonal products work harder

Plan the whole year in one place

The free Seasonal Launch Calendar shows all the main buying seasons for the UK and US with these three dates for each. The spreadsheet works out the dates for any year from 2026 to 2035, lets you change the lead times and add your own occasions, and tells you what to make or list now. There is also a printable version for 2027. When you are ready to write the listing, the Listing Planner helps with titles, tags and descriptions.

Timings are rules of thumb. Dates such as back to school and graduation vary by area, so adjust them to suit your buyers.
